Home fires are the biggest disaster threat, according to the Red Cross, representing more than 62-thousand disaster responses by the Red Cross. According to the Red Cross in Southern Missouri local volunteers have responded to 256 home fires since January 1st. Always keep a pan lid or cookie sheet nearby when cooking, and use it to cover the pan if it catches fire. Use a timer to remind yourself that the stove or oven is on, and always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the house to make sure that the stove, oven and small appliances are turned off. Most importantly make sure that you have working smoke detectors in your home.
