Waynesville Tiger Sports First Game 2024 season
In the first game of the 2024 season, the Waynesville High Tigers faced a challenging opponent in the Carthage High Tigers, resulting in a tough 0-5 loss. Despite the scoreline, several players stood out with commendable performances, particularly senior captain Tristan Boerner, who made an impressive 10 saves in goal. His leadership and resilience between the posts were vital in keeping the team in the game, especially during a barrage of attacks from a technically skilled Carthage side.
Captains Sei Fowler and Brayden Weigelt, who was also named Captain of the Week, along with senior Ace Long, all led by example on the field. Their determination and effort were evident throughout the match, setting a high standard for the rest of the team. However, the team struggled to maintain focus and organization at times, especially following some frustrating calls by the referees and the strong physical play of Carthage.
Carthage opened the scoring early, finding the back of the net in the 7th minute, and added another goal in the 31st minute on a penalty kick awarded due to a handball in the box. Carthage led 2-0 at halftime. The team adjusted their formation going into the second half and controlled the game for the opening ten minutes. However, Carthage’s back line stayed organized and prevented Waynesville from getting quality shots on goal. Carthage capitalized on defensive errors in the middle of the field, leading to a third goal in the 50th minute that effectively secured the win. Additional goals were scored in the 60th and 70th minutes.
The Tigers are looking to have a full squad next week on the road against Poplar Bluff, hoping to recover from the early season illnesses that affected their lineup. Several players off the bench stepped up and contributed positively on the field, as the team aims to build on their conditioning and find their early season form.
While the result was not what the team had hoped for, the efforts of key players and the contributions from the bench provided some positives to build on as they move forward in the season. The team believes the scoreline does not fully reflect the quality they possess this season.
