The Rolla Police Department is reporting a recent uptick in scams

It’s a fact. There are scammers, social media schemers, and online activists relentlessly working to steal your identification, money, property, and reputation. The Rolla Police Department is reporting a recent uptick in scams happening to Rolla businesses and is partnering with the Rolla Chamber of Commerce to spread the word and educate the public about ways to prevent more scams from occurring. The most recent scam occurs in this manner: The scammer calls and says they’re with the U. S. Marshals and is accompanied by one of the managers or owners of the store. The victim is instructed to gather all their cash and bring it to a Bitcoin machine to verify that it isn’t counterfeit. The victim inserts the money into the machine, converts it to Bitcoin, and the money is gone. To keep from being similarly victimized, keep in mind that the IRS, U. S. Marshals, Sheriff’s Department, Police, and Military will not call you. No legitimate government entity will ever ask you to pay for anything using Bitcoin or reloadable credit cards. Scammers are good at their trade. They use fear, scare tactics, and isolation to successfully scam people.
