The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is reviewing a variety of approaches to address a loss in student learning during the pandemic. At a Missouri Board of Education meeting, members heard about one approach to address this challenge head-on – through competency-based learning or CBL. The technique provides a more personalized setting and moves students to the next level based on when they master content, instead of time spent on particular content. Board member Carol Hallquist talked to a Kansas City Public School District education leader about CBL.

The board plans to continue discussing the learning method, including with the education community, families, lawmakers, and business leaders.
