The Missouri Public Defender and the Sheriffs Association are at odds at this time on how to deal with offenders in the county jails. The State Public Defender has sent a letter to the Missouri Supreme Court requesting that they order local judges to immediately release certain inmates in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, President of the Missouri Sheriff’s Association, Sheriff David Parrish tells Regional Radio News, he feels like those decisions need to stay with local judges….

Sheriff Parrish says offenders with misdemeanor or C, D, and E felony charges are individuals, and no two are alike….

According to the Missouri State Defenders letter there is concern about the health and safety of the inmates, corrections workers, nurses and all involved in Missouri’s Justice System. The Sheriff’s Association is opposed to such a broad sweeping release of offenders, but they are also concerned about the safety of the victim in some cases.
