A Doniphan man who was allegedly involved in a burglary in Phelps County was shot by a Rolla Police Officer on Monday. According to the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office, they received a report of a burglary at Three Squirrels Winery in St James on just after 8:30 am. A witness was able to give authorities a description of the suspect and his vehicle, which was spotted on 14th Street a short time later. A deputy began pursuing the vehicle on I-44 and then on Dillon Road, where the suspect wrecked and took off on foot. Authorities say that the suspect was armed and pointed a gun at them. The foot pursuit took officers through a wooded area, across a creek, and through a cattle field, after which the suspect turned and pointed the gun at officers a second time, at which time he was shot in the shoulder. 53-year-old William Gregory Sparks was airlifted to a Columbia hospital where he is in stable condition. Sparks is facing multiple charges in Phelps County.
