Republican Representative Cody Smith of Carthage is sponsoring a tax credit of up to $500 to go toward Missourians who paid personal income tax in 2021 and $1,000 for married couples. This bill is a House majority-led legislation.

Republican Rep. Dirk Deaton of Noel says that this tax credit would support citizens who haven’t received support from other government relief programs.

While the goal of the bill has bipartisan support, many Democrats strongly opposed the bill in floor debate on Wednesday. Democratic Rep. Lakeysha Bosley of St. Louis opposes the bill and worries it is unfair for her constituents who make too little to pay income tax.

The House gave first-round approval to the bill in the session on Wednesday.
