Missouri is riddled with sinkholes, and new ones are constantly being discovered across the Show Me state.

In fact, there are currently over 16,000 identifiable sinkholes.

A geology professor at the University of Missouri, Martin Appold (APP-OLD), discusses why these structures are so common in the state.

Missouri’s largest sinkhole is near Columbia by the Missouri River and I-70.
