Two of the four finalists for Missouri FFA’s Star in Agriscience are in our listening area. One day after receiving the proficiency award in veterinary science, Jacob Toombs of Bolivar was named a finalist for Missouri FFA’s Star in Agriscience Award.  Toombs has conducted two research projects with the support of his local veterinarian.  First, he analyzed the effect of injectable mineral supplements in cows and calves.  More recently, he researched if a transdermal pour-on product would affect the weight gain of bull calves.

Another area FFA member is also a Star in Agriscience finalist.  Destinie Tunis of Eldon has conducted several animal health studies, including whether nitrates and histatins with saliva can stop the growth of E.coli.  She also analyzed maternal prenatal diets to see if they impacted the weight of mouse pups independent of their post-weaning diet.

Toombs and Tunis will find out this summer during Missouri FFA’s Virtual Convention if they are the winner of the Star in Agriscience.
