Recently retired Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith is being recognized once again for his miraculous NFL comeback in 2020. This time he’s being praised by the Pro Football Writers of America.

The former Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller has earned recognition as the George Halas Award Winner for the 2021 PRO FOOTBALL WRITERS OF AMERICA Off-Field Awards. This award is given to the player who overcomes the most adversity to succeed in a season. Smith, of course, suffered a serious leg injury back in 2018 that nearly cost him his life. He was told that he might never play football again, and despite the daunting task at hand, Smith attacked the challenge head-on.

He was ultimately sidelined up until the 2020 season, but he patiently worked and waited for an opportunity to play in an NFL game again. He even did so with some people in the organization actively rooting for his failure. His opportunity would finally come in Week 5 when he threw 17 passes in a loss against the Los Angeles Rams. He’d play in eight games and start six games for Washington, leading them to a 5-3 record and their first playoff berth since 2015.

Smith is the 53rd George Halas Award winner. Other nominees for the award included Washington coach Ron Rivera, Colts LB Darius Leonard and Patriots RB James White. The Halas Award is one of the two oldest awards that the PFWA has given out alongside the Career Achievement Award.
