Legislation Aimed At Protecting Sports Officials

Legislation aimed at protecting sports officials is making the rounds in the Missouri Legislature again. It’s being sponsored by Democratic State Representative Jerome Barnes of Raytown, who’s been a high school football and basketball referee for nearly 30 years. He says disgruntled coaches and fans yell and jeer about calls they do not like and take it out on sports officials…

His bill expands the definition of ‘special victim’ under state statute to include sports officials at a sporting event while performing their duties. The bill received no opposition, and it passed out of committee recently.
