If anyone qualifies as Mr. Maverick, it’s NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki. The 7-foot German forward who revolutionized the way big men are viewed played all 21 of his NBA seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, a record for any player with a single team. Well before he called it quits, we knew Nowitzki’s jersey retirement was only a matter of time away, and on Wednesday night the franchise made it official.

Following the Mavericks’ 99-82 win over the Golden State Warriors in Dallas, the Mavericks held a ceremony for Nowitzki’s jersey retirement that included speeches from owner Mark Cuban, former teammate and current Mavs head coach Jason Kidd, and of course Nowitzki himself. Afterward, Nowitzki became the fourth Maverick to have his number retired by the franchise when his No. 41 jersey was hoisted to the rafters.

Novak Djokovic had his visa refused and will be deported from Australia after traveling to the country in search of his 10th Australian Open singles championship, The Age and Sydney Morning Herald first reported.

This comes after Djokovic was denied entry into Australia when he arrived in Melbourne for the tournament. Djokovic was granted a medical exemption from tournament organizers to compete in the event, even though he is not vaccinated against COVID-19. All players and staff at the tournament must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an exemption granted by an expert independent panel in order to take part in the event.

Earlier this week, Australia prime minister Scott Morrison said Djokovic would “be on the next plane home” if his vaccination exemption request wasn’t “sufficient.” Morrison apparently deemed Djokovic’s request as insufficient, as he issued a harsh message to the world No. 1 after his visa refusal.

“Rules are rules, especially when it comes to our borders,” Morrison tweeted. “No one is above these rules. Our strong border policies have been critical to Australia having one of the lowest death rates in the world from COVID, we are continuing to be vigilant.”

It will be a winners-only affair TODAY when the PGA Tour starts up again at the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, Hawaii. The event on the Plantation Course at Kapalua had an expanded field amid the pandemic last season, and that allowed Harris English to get his first victory in more than seven years. But it will again be limited to champions from the past 12 months, and 38 of the 39 will be on hand. Rory McIlroy is skipping the event, but Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele will join the Tour victors. The wind is expected to stay low, so scores should do the same on the picturesque oceanside course.
Justin Thomas is the 8-1 favorite
