The Baseball Writers Association of America and Major League Baseball announced the 2021 Most Valuable Player Award recipients on Thursday night.

Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani has been voted American League MVP for 2021, and he’s won the award in a unanimous fashion. Ohtani fetched all 30 first-place votes in the balloting, resulting in 420 total points. Second-place finisher Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays was a distant 151 points behind Ohtani.
This isn’t especially surprising given the singular nature of Ohtani’s age-26. On the mound, he pitched to a 3.18 with 156 strikeouts and 42 unintentional walks in 130 1/3 innings. He also notched a quality start in 61 percent of his trips to the mound. As a batsman — typically as the Angels’ DH on days when he wasn’t pitching but also as the vanishingly rare “AL pitcher who hits” — Ohtani slashed .257 clip with 46 home runs and an MLB-leading eight triples.

The National League honors went to Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper. Harper had previously won the NL MVP in 2015, as a member of the Washington Nationals.

Harper prevailed over Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto and San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. He received 17 of the 30 first-place votes. Six went to Soto; two to Tatis Jr.; four to San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford; and one to Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Trea Turner.
Harper, 29 years old, hit .309 with 35 home runs, 42 doubles, and 13 stolen bases (on 16 attempts) during the regular season. According to Baseball Reference’s calculations, Harper contributed 5.9 Wins Above Replacement.
Harper is the sixth different player to win NL MVP over the last six years — or, dating back to his last mvp award with washington.. Previously, the hardware had been awarded to Freddie Freeman, Cody Bellinger, Christian Yelich, Giancarlo Stanton, and Kris Bryant.

MLB players and team owners are deep in the process of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), and for some time the expectation has been that owners will lock out the players if a new CBA isn’t negotiated by the time the current one expires on Dec. 1.

On Thursday, commissioner Rob Manfred seemed to clear the decks for just such a drastic step in his remarks at the conclusion of the quarterly owners’ meetings in Chicago.

The New England Patriots have now won five consecutive games after taking down the Falcons in Atlanta 25-0. Mac Jones and the Patriots offense built up their lead pretty early in this matchup, scoring 13 points over their first three possession to begin the game. New England’s lone offensive touchdown of the night came courtesy of a 19-yard pass to Nelson Agholor from Jones. And as the Patriots’ offense built up a solid enough cushion, Bill Belichick’s defense thrashed the Falcons from the jump.
