The Cardinals broke open a 1-0 game with a five-run fifth inning en route to a 9-3 win over the Royals in St. Louis. Paul DeJong and Dexter Fowler each had two-run doubles in the frame, and Paul Goldschmidt added a two-run homer an inning later. Manager Mike Shildt said the veteran 1st baseman adds plenty to the attack..

 

 

Jack Flaherty fired five shutout innings for the win. Royals manager Mike Matheny said they couldn’t keep pace.

Brad Keller took the loss. Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer in the sixth for KC, which lost its third straight.

Phil Mickelson was on fire in his PGA Tour Champions debut Monday, firing 11 birdies in a 10-under par 61 at Ozarks National to lead the Charles Schwab Series event.

 

Mickelson made five straight birdies on the back nine to lead Australian David McKenzie by one stroke. The five-time major champion became eligible for the Champions circuit when he turned 50 in June.
