Laclede County Sheriff, David Millsap has asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate the in-custody death of an inmate at the jail facility. 22-year old William J. Binns was found dead in his cell at 4:15 p.m. Monday, by a Detention Officer. Binns died from an apparent suicide by hanging. Binns was the lone occupant in his cell and had contacted a member of the detention staff on the intercom at 3:45 p.m. Binns had asked the staff member what time it was. Binns had been moved to a solitary cell assignment earlier in the day after he started a physical altercation with another inmate. Binns was in custody for an assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest and had been in custody since March 2nd of this year.
