Heated Debate In Missouri Senate Over Diversity Statements In State Policy
Heated debate from two Republican Senators temporarily held up floor business Wednesday over the controversial battle over whether diversity, equity, and inclusion statements should be allowed in state policy or not. The House of Representatives voted to previously include bans on D-E-I policies in their version of the budget, but the Senate took it out in theirs. Among those who voted to take it out of the budget was Senator Mike Bernskoetter (berns-getter) of Jefferson City, which confused Warrensburg Senator Denny Hoskins…
Efforts to ban D-E-I policies this Legislative Session have been labeled discriminatory and racist by Democrats, including by Senator Karla May of St. Louis. Republicans say banning them are intended to prevent the endorsement of discriminatory ideology. It remains to be seen if D-E-I language will be included in the budget, which needs to be finalized by Friday.
