Missouri U-S Senator Josh Hawley is sponsoring legislation that would shield Social Security and Medicare from being included in debt ceiling negotiations. He told Missourinet that the two programs should never be used as bargaining chips by either political party:

Hawley’s bill would authorize the U-S Treasury department to issue as much additional debt as necessary, once the ceiling is reached, to fully fund Social Security and Medicare and to make benefit payments on schedule. Reuters reports that Republicans in Congress want to pair raising the debt ceiling with sharp spending cuts, a move opposed by Democratic President Joe Biden.
