Hartville To Be Center Of Attention Today
Today, officials with the Census Bureau and NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) are in Hartville, about 40 miles south of Lebanon, to mark it as the nation’s new center of population.
That’s Brad Kearse is a deputy director of NOAA’s National Geodetic survey. They are the federal agency measuring changes in the US regions.
Today, the Census Bureau is sponsoring a celebration with the town and state leaders, including Grammy winners Rhonda Vincent and the Rage and the Hartville High School Choir.
The federal government has been measuring these population points since the 17-hundreds, Kearse says, where Maryland was the center.
Hartville — population 594 — is the county seat of Wright County in Southern Missouri.
The celebration begins at 4:30 this afternoon.
