Fort Wood recognizes Fire Prevention Week
Fort Leonard Wood Garrison Commander, Colonel Jeff Paine, signed a proclamation Wednesday acknowledging the post’s role in National Fire Prevention Week October 3rd through the 9th.
“Learn the sounds of fire safety” is the theme of this year’s observation. The Fort Wood fire department has pre-recorded safety briefings and activities planned for students enrolled in the installation’s four elementary schools, including 10 safety videos on topics such as candles, the kitchen, Christmas trees, and holiday lights, electricity, dryers, and smoke detectors. Additionally, there will be a puppet show and story time videos also recorded at Fire Station Number 3. The annual Fire Prevention Week marks the anniversary of the Chocago fire, which occurred on October 9th, 1871, taking 250 lives and destroying 17,430 buildings worth more than 16.8 million dollars. A huge fire plagued rural Wisconsin at the same time that year.
