East Elementary Student named hero

A student at East Elementary School in the Waynesville School District has been recognized for a heroic effort that saved the life of another. Maverick Carrillo was in the bathroom when he noticed another student who was choking on a piece of candy. Carrillo who realized he needed help, ran into the hallway and found custodian Alvin Brown, who followed him and saw the child choking and performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the candy. Earlier this month Carrillo was presented the East Citizenship Award, and Brown was presented with a Staff Recognition Award. Assistant Superintendent Hilary Bales is quoted as saying Maverick and Alvin are a dynamic duo who saved the day and are heroes of this story.
