Deryll Wayne “Tuff” Hamlet, the son of William Bertram and Ethel Mae (Vest) Hamlet, was born on August 13, 1928 in Buffalo MO, and departed this life on June 25, 2024. At the time of his passing, he was 95 years, 10 months, and 11 days of age.

As a young boy, Deryll Wayne was nicknamed “Tuff” by his uncle. The name stuck and for the past 95 years he has lived up to his name. Tuff was raised and attended school in Buffalo MO. After graduation, Tuff joined the Army in 1951 and proudly served his country while stationed in Baumholder Germany. He was proud to serve his country and made many lifelong friendships during this time.

After returning home, he was united in marriage to Florene (Hammerbacher) on January 10, 1954 and together they purchased a 500 acre farm in Louisburg MO with a beautiful spring that runs through the middle of the land. “Tuff” and “Flo” had two daughters, Cheryl and Shelly. He was very proud of his family and his farm. Tuff was a member of the Lindley Creek Missionary Baptist Church where he was saved as a young man. Tuff never met a stranger and was a true friend and neighbor.

In 1968 he and 28 men formed the Louisburg Lion’s Club and upon his passing, was the only living charter member. He served as the president for many years and recently received the Lion’s 55 Year Charter Monarch Chevron award for his 55 years of faithful service.

Tuff loved the Missouri State University Lady Bear’s Basketball team where he had season tickets for over 30 straight seasons. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

Tuff was preceded in death by his wife Florene, his parents, his brother Rex Hamlet, his sister Clara Belle (Hamlet) Young and many other loved ones. He is survived by his two daughters, Cheryl and husband Don Roberts of Springfield MO, and Shelly and husband Brett Palen of Rogersville MO. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Quinn, Shay, Alec, Beau and Clay along with their families. He also leaves many other family members and many friends who will all truly miss him.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 7, 2024 between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM in the Cantlon-Otterness & Viets Funeral Home in Buffalo MO. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday July 8, 2024, also in the Cantlon-Otterness & Viets Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Quinn Owensby, Shay Owensby, Alec Palen, Beau Palen, Clay Palen, Drew Keith, and Steve Peterson. Honorary pallbearers will be the Louisburg Lions Club. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery under the care and direction of the Cantlon-Otterness & Viets Funeral Home of Buffalo.
