A former Elkland resident accused of arson has asked for a new judge to preside over her case. Judy Darlene Schneider was arrested in connection with a fire at her home in Elkland in April 2023. According to a report when firefighters arrived at the scene they found Schneider in a downstairs bedroom, sitting on the bed. Her 81-year-old mother was asleep in an upstairs bedroom, and her two 4-year-old grandchildren were asleep on couches in the basement. All of the occupants were evaluated for smoke inhalation by medical teams. Schneider is accused of setting the fire by putting a lamp in a cast iron pot and then using newspaper and a lighter to start the fire. Schneider is charged with first-degree arson and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. A new arraignment date hasn’t been set at this time.
