(Waynesville)–There will be Christmas lights twinkling and music in the area as the annual Christmas on the Square celebration takes place this evening from 6 to 9 o’ clock in downtown Waynesville.

Waynesville Mayor Luge Hardman is inviting the people to turn out for the holiday event.

Participants will be able to enjoy free hotdogs and drinks, enjoy the lighting of the nativity scene, tour the Old Stagecoach Stop, and children can have their photos taking with Santa at Security Bank.

There will be other food and craft vendors participating and other family friendly events taking place.

Historic Route 66 will be closed to through traffic around 5 o’ clock this afternoon. However, westbound motorists can take Highway 17 North to Pine Street, go through the park to Benton Street, then Olive Street, and get back to Historic Route 66 past the downtown area. Eastbound motorists can turn left on Olive Street to Benton Street to Pine Street, and then onto Highway 17.

There is no admission charge to attend Christmas on the Square, which is sponsored this year by Westside Baptist Church.
