Two bills signed into law by Governor Mike Parson will limit new sheriffs to only enrolling in the Sheriff’s Retirement System. Some sheriffs in heavier populated counties are also enrolled in LAGERS, the Missouri Local Government Employees Retirement System. In contrast, deputies can be enrolled in both LAGERS and the Missouri County Employee Retirement System, or CERF. Dave Marshak is sheriff of Jefferson County, south of St. Louis:
Marshak says he’s concerned the new lack of pension options could discourage qualified candidates from running for sheriff. He hopes lawmakers can restore those lost options or another solution during next year’s legislative session.
