Book Highlights Pups For Parole Program

A new book highlights the role puppies and full-grown dogs play in helping prison inmates in Missouri reintegrate into society. Christy Bertelson is author of “Puppies for Parole: Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Redemption in Missouri’s Prisons,” which was published this year:

She says the book goes beyond the history of the program and includes individual stories of some of the dogs and their handlers. Many of the dogs were adopted by the inmates’ families on the outside and were reunited with their handlers when they were released from prison. The book can be found on the Department of Corrections’ website, D-O-C (dot) Mo (dot) gov.
