A House committee heard testimony Wednesday from Republican Representatives Brad Christ, Justin Hicks and Cheri Toalson Reisch to expand charter schools into their respective counties.
According to supporters, charter schools give parents more choices when it comes to their children’s education. Christ, from St. Louis, testified for one of the bills.
Some opponents believe that legislators should instead focus on improving outcomes in existing public-school districts. Others pointed out the differences in oversight and accountability between public schools and charter schools. Charter schools are not under the jurisdiction of
the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Similar bills failed to pass in 2023.
