The Missouri House of Representatives has given initial approval to an effort to expand Interstate-70 to three lanes in both directions. Under the governor’s 859-million-dollar request, the interstate would be expanded in areas around St. Louis, Kansas City and Columbia. House Budget Committee Chairman Cody Smith, a Republican from Carthage, backs the plan.

One more House vote of support would send the plan to the Senate for that chamber to decide whether to back the effort.
