Bolivar Man Charged with Abuse

A Bolivar man and a foster father has been accused of shaking a 3-month-old child, who became unresponsive and had to be hospitalized as a result of the injuries.

34-year old John Grant was arrested Tuesday on a Abuse Of A Child – Causing Serious Emotional Or Physical Injury-A Class B Felony.

A bond recommendation document states, Grant repeatedly struck and shook the baby resulting the baby being hospitalized for eight days.

According to prosecutors, the child became unresponsive, had a subdural hematoma, retinal hemorrhages, and seizures as a result of the head trauma.

The court document says Grant told his wife he got upset because the baby would not stop crying, so he shook the baby.

Prosecutors say that if Grant is convicted on the charge of child abuse resulting in serious physical injury, he faces a minimum of five years in prison without the eligibility for probation or parole. Online court records indicate Grant has been released on $25,000 bond.   A portion of his bond conditions include Grant have no contact or communication with the victim, or victims family, no contact with witnesses, no contact with children under seventeen, and not to be within 1,000 feet of any park, school, daycare, playground, recreational facility, or other place where children congregate.

Grant is due back in court on December 14th for a council status hearing.
